(Understanding Covert Narcissistic Abuse & Finding Yourself Again)

Introduction

Have you ever felt like you were deeply loved but somehow, over time, you lost yourself in that love? Have you found yourself apologizing for things you didn’t do, doubting your own feelings, and shrinking into someone smaller just to keep the peace?

This is the story of Pepper & Salt, a tale of love, devotion, and quiet manipulation. It’s not just a story—it’s a reflection of what happens when love turns into control, wrapped in the most patient and gentle words.

If you’ve ever questioned your own reality, this story is for you

Chapter 1: A Love That Felt Like Home

Pepper was a vibrant African Grey parrot, full of life and deeply loved by those around her. She was expressive, joyful, and had a heart so big that everyone in the forest adored her.

Then she met Salt.

Salt was calm, composed, and deeply respected. Unlike Pepper, who wore her emotions openly, Salt was steady—wise in a way that made her feel safe.

"You are too much sometimes, Pepper," he would say with a gentle smile. "That’s what makes you special."

Everyone admired them together."Pepper is lucky to have Salt," the birds whispered.

She believed it.

But slowly, she started noticing things.

How her friends grew distant. How Salt would subtly point out their jealousy. How she started doubting people she once loved.

And when she asked Salt about it, he only chuckled.

"It’s a joke, Pepper. You’re supposed to laugh."

So she did.

Chapter 2: The Slow Fade –

How Covert Narcissists Control Without Controlling

At first, Salt was everything. He adored her, brought her gifts, and whispered sweet promises.

But then, slowly, subtly, things began to change.

Gaslighting began—not in rage, but in softness."You’re overthinking again, Pepper.""I miss the way things used to be.""I just don’t recognize you anymore."

She felt guilty. Had she changed? Had she become selfish?

She tried to shrink herself back into the bird Salt once loved.

But it was never enough.

And Salt never told her not to grow. He just made sure that if she did, it would cost her his love.

Chapter 3: The First Crack –

The Narcissist’s Jealousy of Your Success

Pepper’s world had been getting smaller and smaller.

But then, she found something of her own. Seed collecting.

She had a gift—finding the rarest seeds and sharing them with other birds. It gave her joy. It gave her purpose.

At first, Salt praised her.

"That’s incredible, Pepper. Look at you, creating something all on your own."

But soon after, his words shifted.

"You seem stressed. Maybe this is too much for you?""You’ve been so busy. I miss when it was just us.""I hope you’re not letting all this attention get to your head."

And then, when Pepper finally achieved something truly great, Salt did something strange.

He disappeared.

For days, he was distant, cold—not angry, just… missing.

And when she asked why, he sighed.

"I just don’t recognize you anymore, Pepper. You’ve changed."

She folded. Again.

Because that was the trick, wasn’t it?

He never said she couldn't succeed. He just made sure that if she did, she would feel guilty for it.

Chapter 4: The Affair That Wasn’t an Affair (Until It Was)

Salt had always been mysterious, and Pepper had learned to trust without question.

"You think too much, Pepper," he would say when she asked where he had been.

So when she first heard whispers of him with another bird, she dismissed it.

Not Salt. Not the one who had loved her before she even loved herself.

But then, she saw it with her own eyes.

The closeness. The way he spoke. The laughter she once thought belonged only to her.

"Salt?" she asked that night.

"Do you love me?"

He looked wounded.

"How could you ask me that?" His voice was pained. "Have I not proven my love to you every day?"

"Then why do I feel like you’re hiding something?"

His silence lasted too long.

And then, he sighed.

"Pepper, I worry about you sometimes. You let your mind create problems that don’t exist. I’ve never given you a reason to doubt me."

Gaslighting.

But she didn’t know the word for it yet. She only knew that she felt crazy, ashamed, guilty.

"I’m sorry," she whispered.

And then, as if rewarding her for believing him, he pulled her close.

"I love you, Pepper. More than anything. And one day, when the time is right, we’ll leave all this behind and start something even greater together."

Future faking.

And just like that, she stayed.

Chapter 5: The Mask Falls –

How Covert Narcissists Change When They Lose Control

Salt had never built her up.

He had only built a cage soft enough that she wouldn’t notice she was trapped.

And now, she had a choice.

Not to leave. Not yet.

But to choose herself, even while staying.

She found her friends again. The ones she had been told were jealous.

They weren’t.

They had been waiting for her to come home.

She looked at Salt, at the love they had shared, and for the first time, she saw the cracks in the foundation.

And one day, when Salt sighed and said, "I miss the old Pepper,"

She smiled.

"I don’t," she said softly.

And she meant it.

Leaving Isn’t Just Walking Away—

It’s Taking Your Power Back

Walking away from someone like Salt isn’t just about leaving.

It’s about detaching—not from the person, but from the illusion.

- Real love doesn’t make you feel small.

- Real trust doesn’t require blind faith.

- Real safety doesn’t make you question your own mind.

But it’s not easy.

Because once the mask falls, they don’t let you go so easily.

They pull. They push. They punish. They love-bomb, then withdraw .They make you doubt everything you’ve just learned.

And that is the moment you need the most help.

Because healing isn’t just knowing the truth.

It’s learning how to survive it.
